How to Play Callbreak on betjii

The Deal

Each of the four players is dealt 13 cards face-down from a standard 52-card deck. On betjii, the dealing rotation advances clockwise after every round. Cards are dealt one at a time, and no player may look at another's hand.

Making Your Call (Bidding)

Once all 13 cards are in hand, each player declares their bid — the minimum number of tricks they commit to winning this round. Bids must be a whole number between 1 and 13. You cannot bid zero; you must always commit to at least one trick. On betjii, bids are entered via the on-screen numeric pad before the first card is led.

Playing the Tricks

The player to the dealer's right leads the first card. Every other player must follow suit if able. If a player cannot follow suit, they may play any card — including a spade trump. The highest card of the led suit wins the trick, unless a spade has been played, in which case the highest spade wins.

Trump Rules (Spades)

Spades are always trump in Callbreak — there is no exception and no round in which this changes. You may not lead a spade on the first trick of a round unless spades have already been played in that round or your entire hand consists only of spades. This rule encourages players to plan carefully around when to reveal their trump cards.

Winning a Trick

The winner of each trick collects the four played cards and leads the next trick. The trick winner is always the player who played the highest spade (if any spades were played) or the highest card of the led suit (if no spades appeared). Aces are the highest-ranking cards in each suit.

Scoring After Each Round

If you win exactly your declared number of tricks, you score that number as whole points. If you win more tricks than you bid, you score your bid plus 0.1 for each extra trick (overtrick). For example, bidding 4 and winning 6 gives you 4.2 points. If you win fewer tricks than your bid, you lose the full bid amount from your score.

Five Rounds, Then Final Tally

A full Callbreak session on betjii consists of five rounds. After the fifth round, all five scores are summed. The player with the highest cumulative score wins the table and the prize pot. In the event of a tie, a tie-breaker round is played.
